Family Learning at Brightside School
During the academic year 2015/16 a wide variety of Family Learning classes and activities were attended by a record number of parents, friends of parents, grandparents and other family members as well as members of the local community. The Sew Me a Story course was probably one of the most successful courses ever offered at Brightside enabling those attending to make a fantastic selection of story bags for their children.
In January we introduced a new course for those people who wanted to improve their own literacy skills. Called “Functional English” it complemented the “Functional Maths” course which has been running at Brightside for many years. Initially booked for one term it has now been extended and will continue to run at least until Christmas.
The ESOL and Maths classes were well attended throughout the year and other parents enjoyed a “Cooking on a Budget” course and “Computer Coding”. As part of an “Our World, Our Food” course, 3 visits were made to the Tesco store on Saville Street where parents of nursery and reception pupils, along with their children, were treated to a behind the scenes tour of the shop as well as lots of food sampling.
The ESOL, Maths and Functional English classes will continue in 2016/2017 and in addition we will be offering the following Family Learning courses;
“Cooking Fun Together”
“Family Health Matters”
“Count Me In”
and a workshop “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”.
