PE Curriculum Intent

At Brightside Nursery Infant School the curriculum and extra-curricular sporting activities are planned to provide a high-quality physical education that inspires all children to enjoy an active lifestyle and become physically confident in a way which supports their physical, mental health and their fitness.

The PE curriculum at Brightside meets all statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, including provision for swimming and is designed progressively to develop fundamental knowledge and movement skills.

As children journey through Brightside, We aim for them to develop their control, coordination and balance and become increasingly competent to access a broad range of opportunities, individually and in cooperation with others. Teaching is planned to increase children’s basic movements in order to develop their flexibility, strength, technique and movement patterns. In games our intent is for children to learn simple tactics and begin to apply these in games such as dodgeball. Children learn to co-operate as they take part in both indoor and outdoor activities, including orienteering. We seek to provide opportunities to compete in school and family of school cluster events which lead to character building and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

We aspire for children to leave Brightside with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the physical confidence and skills to support their health and fitness for their future wellbeing.

Swimming

At Brightside NI School, we offer pupils in year 2 up to three taster sessions of swimming per year before they move into KS2. These are at local swimming pools and are usually in the summer term of year 2.
