Macmillan bake sale update - Brightside donations will go to John's fund to help him raise £1 million

16 September 2022 (by brightside)

Legendary Sheffield Fundraiser John ‘the man with the pram’ Burkhill is back and he needs your help

There’s no doubting that John ‘the man with the pram’ Burkhill is instantly recognisable to many staff and pupils across Sheffield’s schools. John, 83, has been fundraising for Macmillan for almost 15 years after having lost his wife to cancer in 1992 and is regularly seen pounding the streets of Sheffield and marathons across the country sporting his trademark green wig and pushing his famous pram no matter the weather.
But John needs the help of local schools to help him raise his £1million aim for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact on fundraising for Macmillan, with John unable to walk the steel city streets and raise much-needed funds due to restrictions. But now, he’s back and is as determined as ever to reach the magic £1million for Macmillan. John’s fundraising for Macmillan currently stands at £865,626. Macmillan Cancer Support is
working in partnership with the Sheffield Star to help John with his ambition of raising £1million for people living with cancer. He cannot do this alone and the help of Sheffield’s schools will help him to achieve his goal.

As a thank you we will keep you updated with John’s ‘Magic Million’ campaign, where possible we will report on your generosity in the Sheffield Star (print/online/social media), Macmillan and John’s social media pages and you may even be personally thanked by a visit from the legendary pram man himself.
In spite of more than his fair share of personal tragedy, losing both his wife and daughter in the space of a year, John’s determination and dedication has never wavered and we know that Sheffield will get behind the city’s hero in a green wig.
